This is the story of Waleed Hamza from Iraq, who was raised in a Muslim background. When the US invaded Iraq against its former dictator, Waleed worked as an interpreter for the US troops. Months later, the regime was overthrown and soon many of his coworkers were murdered. Even Waleed’s father and grandfather were murdered. This made Waleed angry with God.
His friends were getting beheaded, tortured, amputated, blown-up, and kidnapped. With danger looming in, Waleed moved to the US and there he met Bill and Debbie, a Christian couple. They invited Waleed to church many times and after declining several times, he finally agreed to go to a service. He was surprised to find peace and safety there. Waleed was also introduced to Hannah, who saw a lot of brokenness from everything he had experienced.
Waleed enrolled in the military and was sent to Afghanistan. He asked his friends Bill, Debbie and Hannah to pray for him because he felt very unsafe. Waleed survived many close calls. When he returned to the US, he wanted to date Hannah, but she declined because of their faith differences. Soon after, Waleed had a dream. He saw a bright light and arms that reached out to him. And he heard a voice saying “I AM, I AM, I AM”. Waleed didn’t understand this. Two weeks later, he shared the dream with Hannah. Waleed got offended when Hannah said it was Jesus!
Waleed went to visit his mother in Turkey and Hannah gave her a book written by an Iranian Ex-Muslim who met Jesus. This helped Waleed understand the difference of God’s grace given to him in Christianity. As Waleed’s mom took him to go into the big Hagia Sofia Mosque to pray, he felt a strong tug back that said ‘You don’t belong’. And that was it for Waleed, he was done with Islam. Waleed asked God to show He was real, and He did. He received Jesus Christ as his Saviour. This is story of Yasin from Iraq. Yasin grew up in Iraq as a Muslim. He had questions and asked God to reveal himself. Then Yasin had a dream. He saw someone come and he couldn’t even describe how beautiful He was. He placed his hand on his head and said in Yasin’s mother tongue: “You are my beloved child. This is the way. Follow me.”
After Yasin had this supernatural dream, Yasin met a pastor who gave him a Bible. The first time he read the Bible, Yasin was in tears seeing how beautiful the words where. He had to cover the title of the Bible so that people wouldn’t know. He started to follow Jesus, but kept his conversion secret during the beginning, for fear of persecution. His family noticed a change in him, and Yasin revealed that it was because he was reading the Bible.
Yasin faced violent opposition. The Mullah (religious Islamic leader), told Yasin’s brother that Yasin was giving out Bibles and asked Yasin’s brother to stop him. Yasin’s own brother tried to kill him many times. People threw firebombs at his house and even wrote death threats saying: “If you don’t leave Christianity, we will kill you”.
In time, his wife and children also accepted Jesus as their Saviour. They’ve been isolated and persecuted, but the church has helped them. Yasin studied the Bible and now has become an evangelist. He wants to leave his village, but God has placed into his heart to stay instead and share the gospel he grew up. There's a call-in Christian apologetics program hosted by Avery, and he is known as 'GodLogic', which is the name of the program. He uses this media channel to debate people around the world who are predominantly Muslims about things in Islam vs. things in Christianity.
During one of his programs, an Iraqi Muslim man called in to his program, identified as 'Zozo'. The topic was to prove that the Islamic prophet Muhammad is referenced in the Bible. Zozo had read many Hadiths and is very familiar with the Qur'an. He plainly said that trying to prove that is like a fairy tale. There is no connection that he could see.
The reason why Zozo originally called in was because of his concern for his brother, who had become an extremist Islam fundamentalist. His brother no longer has picture frames at home, does not listen to any music, and has no association with any person identified as a Christian. His brother even renamed his daughter to Aisha. Zozo knows a lot beliefs in his religion don't make sense, like the fact that it is permissible and commendable to have an older 50 year old man marry his young daughter. Zozo also shared that he's had multiple dreams of a 'man in white'. This man has told Zozo that he is in the wrong path, and warns him to leave this path.
Zozo identifies with Jesus more than Muhammad. He sees the importance of living a holy life, rather than a life of hatred and war. Zozo has lived in Iran and Sweden and has watched the atrocities made in the name of Islam, like the beheading of a cousin. Although Zozo is still a Muslim, he is seeking for answers.
